Psalm 46

This singular work is really a through-composed setting of the psalm in Anglican Chant style inspired by the re-scansion of the Psalm in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. “Be still then, and know that I am God,” is utterly convicting.

D No: 258
Text - Incipit: God is our refuge and strength
Text - Author or Scripture: Psalm 46
Performing Forces: SATB organ
Date Published: CE 89
Notes: This was dedicated to fellow Americans held captive in our embassy in Iran, and to their courageous families. It was first sung in early November of 1980 at a service of prayer and remembrance marking the first anniversary of that tragedy — an Evensong attended by the President, all his cabinet members, and members of congress. Many of the family members of the captives were also present.
Audio is from WCC album Great is the Lord.
