Sonata for Strings, Clarinet & Piano

Genre: Instrumental & Fanfares
D No: 511
Performing Forces: str, clarinet, piano
Date Published: MS
Date of Composition: 1952
Notes: Composed at the request of Emerson Meyers, piano department head of Catholic University School of Music, and principal players of the National Symphony Orchestra who were forming a quartet and wanted something new for their premier concert: Werner Lywen, violin, Virginia Harpham, violin, Richard Parnas, viola, John Martin, cello, and William Wright, clarinet, are friends Wayne made music with for forty years.

The second movement is from the Sonata for Organ and was published as Cantilena by HW Gray. The third movement appears as the theme for 19th Century America in The American Adventure.

The piece was substantially re-written at the request of Ronald Arnatt, another long-time colleague, for a 1998 performance at St. John's Church, Beverly Farms, Mass.
